The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Human Reproduction Programme (HRP), in collaboration with the IBP Network, invite you to a global dissemination webinar on the WHO Medical eligibility criteria for contraceptive use, 6th edition (MEC) and the WHO Selected practice recommendations for contraceptive use, 4th edition (SPR).
These two evidence-based normative guidelines, known as the WHO “family planning cornerstones”, provide comprehensive recommendations on who can safely use contraceptive methods and how to use them effectively. Together, they support countries in improving access to high-quality, rights-based family planning services.
This global dissemination event aims to enhance understanding and uptake of the updated guidance. It will present key changes and new recommendations, discuss their implications for national programmes, and explore how countries and partners can adapt and apply the guidance to strengthen the quality and equity of contraceptive care.
Programme and speakers
- Host: Pascale Allotey, Director, Department of Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Ageing (LHR) and Director, HRP
- Moderator: James Kiarie, Unit Head, Contraception, Fertility Care and STI Research, WHO/HRP
- Speakers: Experts from the WHO/HRP Contraception, Fertility Care and RTI Research Unit
The webinar will provide an opportunity for policymakers, programme managers, health care providers, and implementing partners to engage with the technical experts behind the MEC and SPR updates. Participants will learn how these guidelines can be applied to expand contraceptive choice, improve quality of care, and align national policies with global evidence and human rights standards.
